Map showing the countries that are members of NATO.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is a group of countries that work together for safety and peace. It has 32 member states from Europe and North America. NATO was created on April 4, 1949, when leaders from many countries signed an agreement to support each other. Most of these countries are also part of the European Union.

All NATO members have armies, except for Iceland, which does not have a typical army but has a coast guard and some special workers for NATO. Three big countries in NATO — France, the United Kingdom, and the United States — have special powerful weapons.

One important rule in NATO is found in Article 5. It says that if one member is attacked, it is like an attack on all members, and they will help defend each other if needed. Since the end of a big conflict called the Cold War, NATO has grown by adding more countries from 1999 to 2024. Today, NATO also looks forward to helping Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, and Ukraine become members in the future.

Founding members and enlargement

Main article: Enlargement of NATO

NATO started on April 4, 1949, when 12 countries signed an agreement called the North Atlantic Treaty. These countries were Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

More countries joined NATO later. During a time called the Cold War, Greece and Turkey joined in 1952, West Germany in 1955, and Spain in 1982. After the Cold War ended, many more countries became members, including Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and others. Today, NATO has 32 member countries. The area covered by NATO is about 27,580,492 km2.

Special arrangements

Three Nordic countries — Denmark, Iceland, and Norway — joined NATO when it began. They chose not to have permanent military bases, nuclear weapons, or regular military activities on their land unless asked. However, Denmark allowed the US to keep a base on the island of Greenland.

From the 1960s to the 1990s, France followed its own military plans and stayed separate from some NATO activities. Later, in 2009, Nicolas Sarkozy brought France back into some important NATO groups. France still does not join the group that plans for nuclear weapons and does not promise to use its nuclear submarines with NATO, unlike the United States and the United Kingdom.

Membership aspirations

As of March 2024, three countries have said they want to join NATO: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, and Ukraine.

In 2008, NATO said that Georgia and Ukraine "will become members of NATO in the future". Bosnia and Herzegovina was asked to join a special plan to help it join NATO in April 2010.

Withdrawal

No country has ever left NATO. Some places that were controlled by NATO members chose not to join NATO after they became independent countries. These include:

  • Cyprus (became independent from the United Kingdom in 1960)
  • Algeria (became independent from France in 1962)
  • Malta (became independent from the United Kingdom in 1964)

Military expenditures

NATO members spend money on their militaries. The United States spends more than any other country. In fact, the US spends more than all the other NATO members together.

Many NATO members promised to spend at least 2% of their money on defense. But most did not reach this goal in 2023. This led to different reactions from leaders in America and Europe.

Political and popular support

A survey from 2016 showed that most NATO member countries liked the organization, but many wanted to keep their military spending the same. People had different ideas about helping another NATO member if it had a big problem with Russia. In some countries, less than half of the people wanted to use military force to help a NATO ally if attacked by Russia. Germany had the strongest opposition, with 58% against using force. France and Italy also had many people against it. However, more than half of people in the United States and Canada were willing to help. Britain and Poland also showed support, but opinions were divided.

More recent polls in 2025 showed that in the United Kingdom, 45% of people strongly supported NATO, with older people showing more support than younger people. In Slovenia, support for NATO membership was at 52% in 2025, lower than the 66% who voted for it in a vote back in 2003.
